Tina Bernett Allen and Dewone Bennett

Today we talk with Tina Bernet-Allen about weight gain during quarantine, and DeWone Bennett explains defense mechanisms.

Weight Gain Under Quarantine

Tina Bernet Allen talks about weight gain during quarantine. You may have heard about gaining the “COVID-15”, similar to the “freshmen 15”. Bernet sites an article by Brittney Risher on the MyFitnessPal blog. Risher writes that shaming someone or ourselves for gaining weight under quarantine may be harmful. If you suffer from food or body issues, the stress and anxiety from quarantine will affect you differently. For example, if you had a gym routine before, you may not want to work out at home at all.  If your meals are planned around work, you may have a tendency to overeat under quarantine.Bernet-Allen said now is not the time to worry about your weight. Try to avoid the social media posts around weight and exercise to avoid comparing.  Bernet Allen says that plate of spaghetti or a few cookies is OK. This is a strange time for everyone in the world, and we’re all having the same feelings. Staying safe should be our top priority. If you’re feeling bad, try to find ways to get out of your head besides social media or the news. Read a book, volunteer, try fixing something around your house that's been bothering you. We will get through this.  Follow Tina Bernet-Allen on instagram @tbfitnesspro. You can also read the full article from Brittney Risher here.

Defense Mechanisms - Helpful or Harmful?

DeWone Bennett discusses defense mechanisms. Defense mechanisms are a way for us to deal with guilt or upset. One of the most common defense mechanisms is denial.  Disassociation is another one. When you’re in an unpleasant situation, you may take your mind somewhere else rather than experience the trauma. These are primitive reactions, meaning we’re all born with them.Bennett says that we may not always realize when we are using defense mechanisms until someone points them out. There are many defense mechanisms we may use in our relationships. Projection is when we assume how other people feel about us, and so we decide we feel the same way about them. For instance, if you're  feeling lazy in a relationship, you may blame your partner for being lazy. Compensation can be a negative or a positive defense mechanism. Sublimation, when you replace a negative situation with a positive one, is looked upon as a positive defense mechanism. Learn more about the types of defense mechanisms here.
