PETA Founder and President: Ingrid Newkirk
Ingrid Newkirk is an inspiration. She is a leader in fighting for fair treatment of animals, and that is how PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) came to be. As a young girl, Ingrid witnessed some horrendous treatment to animals, and her passion and fire to fight for the voiceless became unstoppable. Before founding PETA, Ingrid was studying to be a stockbroker. When a neighbor of hers abandoned some kittens, she found herself at an animal shelter and decided to get a job. After cleaning kennels and investigating cruelty cases, Ingrid realized there needed to be an organization like PETA.PETA now is the world’s largest animal rights organization. Ingrid is an abolitionist who remains committed to the premise that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. And they have inspired many others to do the same. The goal of PETA and other organizations that are like-minded, is that all living beings should be treated ethically. Today we have an open-ended conversation about some of Ingrid's stories and inspirations, and we talk about PETA's "We are All Animals Tour" which is what brought her to Dallas. You can find more about the event here.**Ingrid is the author of Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do, 50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals, The Compassionate Cook, 250 Ways to Make Your Cat Adore You, You Can Save the Animals: 251 Simple Ways to Stop Thoughtless Cruelty, Free the Animals, Making Kind Choices, Let’s Have a Dog Party!, One Can Make a Difference, and The PETA Practical Guide to Animal Rights. She has also been the subject of the HBO documentary I Am an Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA,spoken at many animal rights conferences, and written numerous articles on the treatment of animals in homes, slaughterhouses, circuses, and laboratories.

Ali Miller joins us today to talk about her book, and specifically she gives us some anti-inflammatory foods. The importance of reducing inflammation is a big one, and most people don't know it.Also in studio with us is Shawn Wells. Shawn is a registered dietitian and a certified sports nutritionist. They both talk about the importance of food for good mental health. The gut-brain connection is something that so many professionals are just now learning about.
